Last Saturday, Winter Storm Helena blew across the Boston area, dumping over a foot of snow in places and shutting down roads. Not knowing the storm would arrive on the same day, I previously agreed with Jen and Elana to shoot their engagement photo session then. None of us wanted to cancel, but instead, we became excited about taking pictures in the extreme weather. We wanted the great opportunity to capture chic atmospheric photos!

I love a snow photo session, and when the flakes fall heavier and thicker, the photographs are even more interesting and unusual. Snow creates a great contrast and visual depth to shots. It also hides unnecessary or distracting details. Most importantly, snow creates a unique atmosphere that results in eye-catching and memorable images! Winter Storm Helena provided a white, snow globe environment, perfect for engagement photos. From snowflakes caught in Jen and Elana’s hair to swirling, snowy backdrops, the storm created a romantic and intimate setting.

In any weather, Boston is an excellent choice for a wedding or an engagement photo session. The piers, ships, ancient buildings, bridges and paved roadways create a unique mood and ideal city setting for romantic pictures. We started our Boston winter engagement session on a Boston Harbor pier. The gray sea and snow white background forced my camera to focus on the pop of red hair and Jen and Elana’s happy moments, sharing their engagement. From there, we transitioned to a setting with a magnificent view of the Boston Harbor. By the way, due to the bad weather, popular locales among tourists and residents of the city were empty. Jen and Elana seemed to have the city to themselves. They strolled along the harbor front, the only people in the entire frame. Next, we walked to the legendary Boston restaurant The Barking Crab in which Jen and Elana have shared many meals. We captured a few clearer images without the snowfall in a place that is important to their story as a couple. But the images that will stand out most from this engagement session are those of Jen and Elana, alone together, surrounded by a winter wonderland in their home of Boston.
